The Sweet pitcher plant traps insects using a rolled leaf. It grows about 65 cm high. The top part of the leaf is flared into a lid to prevent rain from entering the pitcher and diluting the digestive secretions within. The top part of the pitcher is covered with short, stiff, downward pointing hairs. These hairs make it next to imposible for insects to climb back up from the tube. As if that wasn't enough, the Sweet Pitcher Plant also has nectar secreting glands to attract prey and a slippery rim, making the prey loose their footing and fall into the trap where they are digested. The plant produces bright red, sweet smelling flowers.

The size of the Yellow Butterwort's leaves vary with the age of the plant, but are generally around 5 to 7 cm when mature. A mature plant will bear multiple flower stalks, each bearing one flower usually chrome-yellow in color. They range from 5 cm to about 25 cm in height. The plant can however occasionally have purple, pink, or white blooms. Flowers range in size from 1 to 3 cm. A sticky substance is secreted by glands on the surface of the leaf, where the unsuspecting prey is captured and slowly digested. Its main prey is usually pretty small, such as midges, whiteflies, gnats, etc.
